z & his neighbor friend, s, with her grandfather, on their new swing!

our pipe started gushing one evening, so we had to turn off the water until a plumber could come. most inconvenient.
the capped off pipe, and the hole which needs to be filled

z slaved away to get the job finished

money pit

the awning is taking a little break...
i returned from school supply shopping on sunday - a frustrating sort of shopping - to find that our retractable awning had fallen down off the house. luckily nobody was hurt. i've been spending too much time since trying to get the situation solved. it is currently removed, and the roof is partially fixed. the roofers didn't have shingles to match, so they'll be back tomorrow. with my luck, they'll return right when the kids are trying to nap. they totally ruined naptime today. the roofing company will supposedly pay to have an awning company reattach the awning, at my request. i had someone from an awning company come out to look at it first, then had a building contractor look at it, and then i contacted the roofer. on top of everything, j has been working late, as he's been swamped at work. this has been solely my responsibility to solve, right in the middle of scheduling madness. this week had better improve.
ummm... that doesn't look right

ya missed the rafter - sorry fascia!

spooky garbage

our trash can is glowing. it has a flash light in it that is turned on. earlier this afternoon, before z's nap, he was sitting on the potty - pooping. grandma was with him. she asked him to take off his shorts, as it was time to get changed into his pajamas. z got mad, and threw the lit flash light into the pooped-in toilet. grandma fished it out, and it got thrown away here. that was around 1pm today. it is still lit. how long do you think it will last?

so cute.

this past weekend, s took her first steps by herself. she is by no means walking, but every now & then she gets brave & tries to walk on her own.

z had his first bee sting on sunday. we were at a bbq, & it just happened out of nowhere. he handled it well, and didn't have any allergic reaction, not at least this time.

s had her 9 month appointment last wednesday. she climbed from 70% in height to 90% - she's grown a lot! she's still 92% for weight, & 99% for head circumference. her iron levels are perfect, and no lead showed up the blood test.

s & i camped out this past saturday in the back yard. she did a great job! she slept until 5am, & i nursed her. we cuddled a bit & just passed the time, and she went back to sleep until 8am (and so did i). z & j camped out sunday night.

i just saw the porch motion sensor light get triggered. i looked out & saw a cat, and then noticed it was our cat, persia!!!! i have NO idea how long the poor thing was outside, but it's amazing she was hanging out there. usually cats don't come back if they're not used to going outside, or they'll hide somewhere on the property, too scared to venture out, but not knowing how to get back in. she probably has all kinds of stuff on her now (fleas, etc). grrrrreat.

on monday night, one of the spigots outside broke (the pipe burst), so there was a huge flood of water (unbeknownst to us for awhile). j managed to turn the water off to the house for the night, until a plumber came the next day. that was a whole mess that would've been nice to avoid, but at least it's all taken care of now.

i think s is teething again. she had two great nights, and then last night i had to get up twice with her. i am SO tired! there are more pictures to post, but right now it is time for bed.

baby s

she's a cutie, eh?
she likes to have little "humming" conversations with me when she's nursing. she also sticks her arm behind me as if she's hugging me. she now has eight teeth, as of a few days ago. her lower left one finally poked through. i noticed she was sticking her finger in the back of her mouth today. the dentist said her molars would come in next, so i wonder if those are starting now.
z is still cute, too. the latest thing with him is that i make him get ready by himself for his nap. i used to have to count back from five a bunch of times, but he's getting better at doing it himself.
uncle e & cousin n came for a visit this weekend, so we stayed busy visiting with family. we went to the childrens museum, went swimming - ne'er a dull moment!

survival.

this week has been really busy. j is getting swamped at work, and has been getting home after i've started both kids' baths. while it is fun to have the opportunity to spend more time with my kids (with my lighter summer schedule), it is way more exhausting than teaching (well, most students anyway). the past two evenings, i've indulged in a gin & tonic. just one each evening. last night it helped relax me enough to get through the family story time at the library. tonight it helped me get dinner cooked & served, with energy left over for playing outside. z was very sweet tonight - he said "i love you" twice, unprompted. his behavior was less than angelic - he had a couple time outs, but i got through dinner without majorly losing it (unlike before the kids' nap time today). he also wanted to wait for me to finish s's bedtime so he could say goodnight & give me a hug. for a kid that isn't so verbal and outgoing with feelings, it's a big deal. he did a very good job of voluntarily riding his yellow bike, and managed to do it without toppling over.

early saturday morning, i set out a bunch of toys in an arc around s. she's almost walking on her own, but hasn't started to crawl yet (other than scooting around using 1 hand sitting on her bottom), so i was trying to encourage her to get on all fours. she started rocking, but then started doing something else...
i said, "you can do it!"
she thinks, "i can poop???!"
i said, "are you pooping?"
she thinks, grunting, "yyyyeeesssss!"
we got a bit of a date saturday afternoon. grandma came over to baby sit while j & i went to review pictures from the family photo session a few weeks ago. there are some really good ones, and we look forward to finally decorating the house a little. j was gone to the east coast last week mon-thurs, and i survived. nobody actually got sick! it was amazing!
on sunday morning, we had some friends over for brunch, and then we spent the rest of the day relaxing. we went to the little park to play for awhile, and then got a pizza.
at some point in the weekend, z got a booboo on the side of his head, right near his eye. he was hiding from us in his closet, and somehow bumped into something (laundry basket???). he emerged crying, and we saw a bump immediately forming, with a blueish hue to it. it proceeded to turn different colors the next two days. even his teachers at school on monday noticed it changing colors, and asked what had happened! when our friends asked z what happened, z said, "you should see the other guy!" :)
that wasn't without a little coaching from daddy the day before.
sloane was scared of two noisy things yesterday... it's the first time i've noticed her being scared of anything. the first was the vacuum cleaner, and the second was a dog barking. z took a tumble off his yellow bike yesterday, but no blood. he made some cute comment about hoping his neighbor k wasn't too sad playing by herself (she hadn't even been home!), because we hadn't been able to go outside to play because i had to cook dinner. he comes up with these really cute things he says... his little mind is starting to think for itself, and it comes up with all kinds of things.

new tooth!!!

s has gotten another tooth - her seventh! it's her bottom right one. i think she's working on another bottom tooth, on the left.
she's so cute! she's getting braver with her walking - sometimes walking with just holding on with one hand. she still isn't crawling yet - not able to keep her knees together.
at bath time, she doesn't mind water poured over her head. z used to hate it! she just tries licking at the drops falling over her nose & lips. she had fun splashing in the water tonight.
we have a cute little game we like to play - i touch her nose & make a noise, and then she touches my nose back. she used to just do it for me, but now she'll do it for grandma.
j successfully returned home late last night. both kids were happy to see him before nap time today!

popsicles

i purchased some popsicle makers (they're called "pops" these days, i found out), because z loves them, and i'd prefer he eat ones made from real ingredients. i initially bought a set of 4 (well, actually, j picked them out, running an errand for me), and since z liked them, i got two more sets of 6. after he had ate a couple, i couldn't find the popsicle stick parts for the life of me. i looked everywhere, but they were nowhere to be found.

i figured out tonight what had happened, when, once again, i couldn't find them when i was doing the dishes.

z has been throwing them in the trash!
aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
now i know, and it better not happen again.

s's 9 month bday

z made a cake today with abuelo/a while i was teaching this morning. we ate it after nap time in the afternoon, and had a mini birthday celebration for s, who is 9 months old today. i can't believe she is 3 months shy of a year old!!! after cake, we went to the children's museum, and grandma came along, too. j flies back tonight, arriving home after midnight.

z...

z told me, the other day, that i am good at finding things - i'm a good finder. he needed help finding his snack trap, and i found it for him. i told him, "that's what mommies do all the time. of course i'm good at finding things!"
we're always listening to kids' cds in the car, and two of them have nursery rhymes on them. he's started randomly reciting some of them. the most recent one, in his rendition, is "seesaw, soccer town, which is the way to soccer town...." can you guess which one he's doing?
s is getting very good at walking with her walker (on carpet). she needs help turning it around, though, when she runs into things.

first bike ride

s's first bike ride - she was all smiles!

z was very very excited about setting off fireworks this year! he did a special excited fireworks dance.

4th of july, '12

it was hot on the 4th of july, so it was a perfect day for playing with z's sprinkler toy. z was excited! mommy & daddy, however, didn't exactly share z's enthusiasm. anyway, we began the day with the cedar hills parade. near the end of that, mommy left to go accomplish some shopping, as her jeans were getting too loose (gradually losing the baby weight!). daddy, z, & s also went to the mall to do some shoe shopping. we met up afterward, and went home together for naps. after naps was fun in the sprinkler, then dinner with uncle c & aunt r.
