on milford sound is an underwater observatory. in the sound, fresh water floats on top of salt water. the fresh water gets colored by dirt from runoff, which blocks the sunlight. as a result, coral grows in the salt water, just 10 or so meters under, that normally grows 10 times as deep or more in the ocean. this black coral (which is actually white) is very rare to see.
